Is My Hair Losing? Common Causes and What You Can Do

Rossana Nieto

Hair loss is one of the most frequent consultations in dermatology. And although losing between 50 and 100 hairs a day is normal, many people begin to worry when they notice more hair on their brush, in the shower, or on their pillow. The good news is that in most cases, hair loss can be solved . And understanding the causes is the first step to finding the right treatment.

Main causes of hair loss

  • Genetics: Hereditary baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common cause. It can begin in adolescence or appear with age, in both men and women.
  • Hormonal changes and health: Pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, thyroid problems, and anemia are common and treatable causes.
  • Stress: Intense emotional or physical events can cause diffuse hair loss weeks or months later.
  • Nutritional deficiency: Lack of iron, zinc, protein, or vitamins such as biotin can weaken the hair follicle.
  • Aggressive hair habits: Tight hairstyles, constant straightening, dyes, or excessive heat can damage the scalp and promote hair loss.

When to see a doctor?

  • When the fall is sudden, intense or patchy.
  • If there is itching, burning, redness or flaking of the scalp.
  • When loss affects your self-esteem or emotional well-being.

Tips to take care of your hair

  1. Eat well: include proteins like eggs, iron, fruits and vegetables.
  2. Avoid heat and aggressive products such as bleaching or excessive ironing.
  3. Don't comb your hair too hard or use hairstyles that put tension on your scalp.
  4. Sleep well and reduce stress: your hair will thank you too.
  5. Consult early: There are effective treatments such as minoxidil, supplements, laser therapy, or even transplants in some cases.

Not all hair loss is permanent. In many cases, with a proper diagnosis, lifestyle changes, and medical follow-up, it's possible to stop hair loss and stimulate growth . If you notice anything unusual, don't wait: your hair health is also part of your overall well-being.
